Here are three tips everyone should know to learn the guitar fast. Playing guitar is a lot of fun, but it can also be challenging to learn.
In this article I will share with you some ways to pick up the guitar a little faster and ultimately get more enjoyment out of it. But I should mention up front that these tips by themselves are not going to make you a guitar player, there are many methods and practices to discover to learn the guitar.
The most important thing to do honestly is practice. The old phrase practice makes perfect may be trite, but it is also true. Only with time and effort will you become a great guitarist. With that said here are three things to keep in mind as you learn the guitar.
First – Absorb as Much Information as You Can About Chords
Understanding the names and positions of the chords is a good idea. Learning the chords will greatly speed up your overall progress as a guitar player and musician. But it is important not to stop there; you need an understanding of the theory behind the chords as well. If you don’t know that a chord typically consists of a tonic and dominant, then you need to do more studying. You can make a power chord with two notes a 1st and a 5th.
And then there are those chords that contain seconds, thirds, and sevenths. It is a great asset to be able to construct some common chords, and be able to create your own. This knowledge also makes it easy to recognize chords, an invaluable skill for guitar playing.
Simply learning the names and positions of chords will seriously constrain your ability; especially considering there are thousands of them, so there is no way you could memorize them all anyways.
Second – Study the Guitar Scales
Honestly you don’t need to know all the scales, the knowledge you gain from learning the chords will be good enough. But there are a couple of scales important to learn the guitar. The major scale, the minor scale and the pentatonic scale are the three important ones.
Those are the three scales that rock music is founded on, and are commonly used in all types of music. And you should know the blues scale if you plan on playing the blues. These scales and more can easily be found online, a great resource to help you learn the guitar.
Third – Finding the Right Balance
Attaining the right balance between having fun and studying the theories is my final secret to learning guitar. If you only have fun you will not progress, if you spend all your time studying you will burn yourself out and not want to play anymore.
This balance is going to vary from person to person; it is up to you to find this balance even though that in itself can be a challenge. So you need to find the balance that will allow you to enjoy yourself, while also challenging yourself to develop your guitar skills further, this will be a powerful practice to help you learn the guitar.
