In times of difficulty one of the first things that people do is pull in the purse strings. Cutting down on all the ‘luxuries’ and all the un-necessary gadgets, clothes and maybe even take-aways.

Of course even when you start to cut down on your spending you may still find that it isn’t enough and you then find yourself in financial difficulty and in need of debt help as soon as possible.

The first thing to do is not to panic or worry as there are lots of options open for you and the first is to make sure a proper and full assessment of your finances. Only once you have taken ‘every’ penny of spend into account and worked out that you do need some help then you need to make a start to get you back on the right financial track.

If you are paying a mortgage and find that keeping up with repayments is difficult then make sure and talk with your lender sooner rather than later. Most people are scared of their lender and then leave their arrears running for too long making it even more difficult to negotiate with their lender. Lenders don’t bite, and the majority of them will be open to reduced payments, as long as you can continue to make some form of payments.

Once you have sorted out your lender and if you have credit card payments to make and you are struggling then you should also do the same here too. Get in touch with your credit card companies and let them know of your situation. They may drive a much harder deal than your mortgage lender but be calm and don’t let them bully you into something, which you just can’t afford.
